20 Christmas card photo ideas (families, couples and pets)

A Christmas card photo has a job most photos do not: it has to work small, printed, and with a greeting next to it. That means simple backgrounds, faces big enough to recognise at postcard size, and some empty space for the text. Pick one idea, plan it, and shoot it in soft daylight or by the tree.

Framing a card photo

  • Leave space for the text. Put the family on one side and keep the other third clean, like the One-Point Vertex guide.
  • Keep faces large. Fill at least half the frame with people.
  • Shoot both vertical and horizontal. Card templates come in both.
  • Choose a calm background. A front door, a plain wall, a snowy field or a soft-focus tree.

Family card ideas

1. On the front steps. Coats, scarves, wreath on the door. Parents behind, kids in front.

2. Matching pyjamas on the bed. Everyone lying on their stomachs, chins in hands, facing the camera. Shoot from slightly above.

3. Under the tree. The family sitting on the floor in front of the tree, lights soft behind.

4. The walk in the snow. Walking towards the camera in a line, holding hands.

5. The red truck or sled. Kids on a sled, parents pulling.

6. Wrapped in fairy lights. Everyone holding one long string of lights.

7. Peeking over a wall. Only heads and Santa hats showing over a fence or sofa back. Funny, and easy to read small.

8. The baby in the box. A baby (safely) in a big gift box or basket with tissue paper, shot from above.

Couple card ideas

9. The forehead kiss by the tree. At 2x, tree lights blurred behind.

10. Holding a sign. A chalkboard with "Merry Christmas from the [names]".

11. Matching sweaters. Side by side, laughing.

12. Kissing under mistletoe in the doorway.

13. The engagement or pregnancy reveal. A ring or a scan photo in focus, the couple soft behind.

Pet card ideas

14. Dog in a scarf. At the dog's eye level, at 2x, with a treat above the lens to get the head tilt.

15. Cat in a gift box. Cats will sit in any box. Wait.

16. The family with the pet in the middle. The pet sitting between the kids.

17. Paws and stockings. A pet lying next to its own stocking.

Simple and creative

18. The ornament reflection. The family reflected in a large silver bauble.

19. Hands holding mugs. Everyone's hands around cocoa mugs, top-down, no faces.

20. The yearly photo. The same pose and place as last year's card. A yearly series is the most loved card of all.

Getting everyone in the shot

  • Prop the iPhone on a tripod or a stack of books at the adults' chest height.
  • Frame first, leave a gap for yourself, then set the 10-second timer.
  • Take several rounds and pick the one where everyone is looking.
  • Shoot at 1.5x or 2x so faces near the edges do not stretch.

For a printed card, warm and slightly faded colour looks timeless. In slay you can swipe through film stocks live before you shoot.

Frame the card

slay overlays composition guides on your live iPhone camera, so you can leave room for the greeting before you set the timer.
