One-Third

Rule of thirds — subject in the lower third

Travel & scenery

A scenery shot where the main element — a bridge, a building, a horizon — sits in one third of the frame and the sky gets the other two. Simple, airy and very Instagram.

How to shoot it

  1. 1Any directionWorks in any light direction; looks especially natural with side light.
  2. 2Eye levelSet the camera at eye level and shoot.
  3. 31.5x zoomStay at least 3 metres from the scene and use 1.5x zoom.
  4. 41/3 placementPlace the main scene in the 1/3 area, separate it from its surroundings and line it up with the rule-of-thirds grid.

Tip: Use horizontal lines or pillars, such as bridges, to separate the areas.

Using it in slay

Open slay, pick One-Third from the guide picker and the overlay appears on your live viewfinder. Line your subject up with the guide using the gold crosshair, follow the height, angle and zoom above, and shoot — no cropping or editing needed. Finish the look with one of 38 built-in LUTs.
