Golden ratio vs rule of thirds on iPhone
Phi grid, Fibonacci spiral or thirds? What the difference is and which overlay to use on your phone.

The golden ratio (phi grid) and the rule of thirds are both ways to place a subject off-center. The phi grid's lines sit slightly closer to the middle (at roughly 38% and 62% of the frame) than the rule of thirds (33% and 67%). In practice, for phone photos the difference is small, and the rule of thirds is easier to see and use. The iPhone's built-in grid is a rule-of-thirds grid. If you specifically want phi grid or Fibonacci spiral overlays, Wise Camera offers them; slay, the composition guide camera, builds its 14 guides on thirds, triangles, diagonals and vanishing points instead.
What is the rule of thirds?
Divide the frame into a 3x3 grid. Place the subject on one of the lines or where two lines cross. It works because it leaves space around the subject, which makes the image feel balanced and alive rather than static.
What is the golden ratio in photography?
The golden ratio (about 1:1.618) produces the phi grid — a 3x3 grid whose middle row and column are narrower — and the Fibonacci (golden) spiral, which curves toward one point of interest. Photographers use the spiral to lead the eye through a scene toward the subject.
Which should you use?
- Rule of thirds — the easiest default, great for portraits, landscapes and travel. Built into the iPhone camera.
- Phi grid — a subtler, slightly more centered placement. Useful once thirds feel automatic.
- Fibonacci spiral — best for scenes with a natural curve: staircases, coastlines, swirling patterns.
For most people learning composition, mastering the rule of thirds first gives the biggest improvement.
Apps with these overlays
- Apple Camera — rule-of-thirds grid (Settings > Camera > Grid).
- slay — 14 guides built on thirds, two-thirds, triangles, one- and two-point vertex, vanishing point and top-down layouts, each with height, angle, zoom and distance. No phi grid. See One-Third and Two-Third.
- Wise Camera — 15 classical rules, including phi grid, Fibonacci spiral, golden triangles and harmonic armature. See slay vs Wise Camera.
FAQ
Does the iPhone have a golden ratio grid? No. The built-in grid is a rule-of-thirds grid.
Is the golden ratio better than the rule of thirds? Not inherently. They are close, and the rule of thirds is easier to apply consistently on a phone.
Does slay have a golden ratio overlay? No. slay's guides are built around thirds, triangles, diagonals and vanishing points, with a full shot recipe for each.
