Meet the new slay: Darkroom Instrument design
Warm graphite, one safelight accent, keys that press and prints that develop. slay, rebuilt as an instrument.

We rebuilt slay from the ground up. slay 2.0 introduces Darkroom Instrument, a design system that makes your iPhone feel less like an app and more like a real camera: warm graphite surfaces, one glowing accent, keys that press, and photos that develop like prints. Every pixel exists to keep your eye on the shot.
TL;DR: slay 2.0 is a full redesign of the slay camera app. The Darkroom Instrument design uses warm dark tones, a single safelight-orange accent for live states, physical-feeling controls with haptics, 38 film-stock looks and a print-develop animation. It's free on the App Store for iPhone.
A camera you hold. A darkroom you learn in.
Photography has always been physical: the click of a shutter, the red glow of a darkroom, a print slowly appearing in the tray. The new slay brings that feeling back to your phone, and organizes the app the same way a photographer works — learn in the Field Guide, shoot with the Camera, review in the Darkroom.
Why slay now looks like a darkroom
- Warm graphite, never pure black. Layers of soft dark grey create depth, so the interface stays calm and your photo stays the brightest thing on screen.
- One safelight accent. Named after the red-orange darkroom lamp, it appears only when something is live: a locked subject, the active guide, a selected look, a toggle switched on. Because it's rare, it means something.
- Three typographic voices. Instrument Serif for moments, Geist Mono for camera readouts like 48MM · AUTO, and Geist for everything you read.
- Hardware, used with purpose. The camera gets real keys and a true-black LCD readout. The rest of the app stays clean and quiet.
What's new, screen by screen
| Screen | What changed |
|---|---|
| Onboarding | A calm welcome that sets the darkroom mood from the first tap. |
| Field Guide | Your learning hub: 18 short lessons, most ending in a shooting assignment, plus today's assignment at the top. |
| Lesson | One idea at a time, then a button that opens the camera with the right guide or look loaded. |
| Camera · Guide | A guide dial that turns like a focus ring, and an LCD strip that reads GUIDE, then LOCKED. |
| Camera · Look | Filters become film stocks with catalogue codes, like Arabica 12, Contrail 35 and Neon 770. Swipe to switch, hold A/B to compare, slide the strength. |
| Camera · Adjust | Fine-tune the image with one reset key to start over. |
| Darkroom | A contact sheet of your shots. Open one and it develops like a print, next to its shot report. |
| Settings | Grouped lists with a short helper line under each option. |
| Slay Pro | A redesigned upgrade screen, marked with the safelight Pro stamp. |
Motion: weight, then light
Every movement in the new slay has weight, and the physical ones have a matching haptic.
- The shutter fires and the iris blinks. Press, and a six-blade aperture closes and opens over the viewfinder, with a firm tap.
- The print develops. In the Darkroom, your photo rises out of paper-white from the top down while the readout says DEVELOPING.
- Guides march, then lock. While slay searches, the guide's dashes march. When your subject lands in the zone, the dashes stop, the zone fills with light and your phone gives a success haptic.
- Keys travel. GUIDE, LOOK and ADJUST press down like real buttons and light up when selected.
- A dial you can feel. Flick the guide ruler and it carries momentum, snapping to each guide with a tick. The lens then zooms to that guide's preferred focal length.
- A level you can feel. Bring the horizon level and you get a soft tap.
The shot report
Every photo you take with a guide or a look keeps a short shot report: was the subject in the zone, was the horizon level (to the tenth of a degree), and which film stock and strength you used. The Darkroom shows it as a score, like 2 / 2, next to the developing print. It's the fastest feedback loop in mobile photography — see how slay's composition guides work. Everything in this release is in the changelog.
