We read 527 TikToks about cameras, photo apps and photo editing that passed 100K views between mid-April and mid-October 2026, and sorted their opening lines into 15 recurring hook formats. This post lists each format with real examples, explains how the method works and where it falls short, and connects what we found to composition.
The short version
- The sample: 527 public TikToks, each with at least 100K plays, posted on or after Apr 14 2026, with a camera, photo or editing keyword in the caption or on-screen text. They come from 31 public hashtag feeds.
- The same hook shapes keep coming back: a price anchor ("you don't need a G7X"), a before/after, a named pain, a secret, a numbered list, a skit, a single rule taught fast, a settings reveal, and a few others. We found 15 in total.
- Many of the biggest examples are paid partnerships for editing apps. The hashtag pages favor them, so read this as "what works in sponsored and organic photo-app content", not a random sample of TikTok.
- We don't give counts or percentages per format. The grouping is a judgement call made after reading every row, not a hand count.
- The formats closest to composition (guided shooting, one rule taught fast, "foolproof way to elevate your pics") don't depend on a filter or a dupe. They teach where to put the subject. That's the same job Slay's composition guides do on the live viewfinder.
Method
- Source: TikTok's public hashtag feeds, loaded while logged out in a headless browser. No account was used, and nothing was posted, liked, followed or commented on. Each tag page was scrolled about 8 screens, and the feed responses were saved: video id, creator, play count, post time, caption and on-screen text stickers.
- Tags (31): cameraapp, cameraapps, photoapp, photoeditingapp, photoediting, editingapp, photographyapp, photoeditor, aiphotoeditor, appsforphotos, appsyouneed, appsrecommendation, iphonecamera, iphonephotography, iphonetips, iphonehacks, phototips, photographytips, cameratips, posingtips, digicam, vintagecamera, retrocamera, filmcamera, disposablecamera, lightroommobile, vsco, picsart, hypic, facetune, aesthetictiktok.
- Funnel: 2,221 unique videos collected. Of those, 527 had at least 100K plays, were posted on or after Apr 14 2026, and had a camera, photo or editing keyword. According to our research notes, 291 of the 527 are explicitly about an app or editing tool. Most of the rest are physical digicams, retro cameras or iPhone camera tips, which we kept as adjacent references.
- Numbers: view counts are play counts as TikTok returned them on Oct 14 2026, and they change daily. Dates are post dates in Tashkent time (UTC+5).
Caveats
- Hashtag pages skew toward sponsored posts. Many examples are paid partnerships (Airbrush, EPIK, Hypic, BeautyCam, Lightroom, Picsart). Big accounts and paid posts are overrepresented.
- No per-format counts. We sorted videos into formats after reading all 527 rows, but we didn't count how many videos fall in each one. We don't claim any format is more common than another, or that any format causes views.
- Some hooks come from captions. We didn't watch the first frames. When TikTok exposed on-screen text stickers (137 of the 527 videos), the hook below is that text, word for word. Otherwise we quote the caption and label it, and the spoken or visual hook may be different. Text burned into the video pixels isn't captured.
- Small sample. These are a few hundred videos from 31 tags over six months. They show which patterns exist, not how often they happen across TikTok.
The 15 hook formats
Each example shows the creator, the views as of Oct 14 2026, the post date, and whether the quoted text is on-screen text or a caption.

What this says about composition
Most of these hooks sell a fix that comes after the shot: a filter, a relight, a "G7X" preset, an HD upscale. A smaller group sells something else, which is knowing where to put the subject _before_ you press the shutter. That's formats 8, 9 and 11.
- One rule, taught fast (format 9) is the rule of thirds, foreground and leading lines, one per video. Those are the same principles behind Slay's One-Third, Triangle 1 and Vanishing Point guides.
- "The app tells you what to do" (format 8) is the closest match to how Slay works. You pick a guide, line your subject up with the gold crosshair on the live viewfinder, and shoot.
- "Foolproof way to elevate your [scene] pics" (format 11) works as a series because each scene needs its own framing. That maps onto picking a guide per scene: Travel Shot for landmarks, Two-Third for a plate or a person, Two-Point Vertex for buildings.
- Before/after (format 2) doesn't have to mean an edit. The same shot with and without a composition guide is a before/after too, and it's one a viewer can repeat with their own phone.
None of this proves that composition hooks get more views than editing hooks. Our data can't show that (see the caveats above). It does show that composition-first videos reach 100K+ views in the same feeds as heavily sponsored editing-app posts, with a simpler promise: frame it right the first time.
