How to take better composed photos on iPhone without editing

To take better composed photos on iPhone without editing, decide the frame before you press the shutter: pick where the subject goes (a third, a diagonal or dead center), set the camera height and distance on purpose, keep the edges clean, and use the iPhone's zoom lenses instead of cropping later. The built-in grid helps; a composition guide camera like slay goes further by drawing the exact layout on your viewfinder and telling you the height, angle and zoom to use.

1. Turn on the grid

Settings > Camera > Grid. The four lines show the rule of thirds: placing your subject on a line or an intersection almost always looks more natural than the dead center of a random frame. See our iPhone camera grid guide.

2. Choose the placement before you shoot

Decide one of three placements and commit:

3. Set height and distance on purpose

Most "bad" phone photos are taken from eye level, too close. For portraits, hold the phone at the subject's chest height and step back 4 metres or more. For food, go to 45° from above, or straight down for a flat lay.

4. Zoom with lenses, not crops

Use 2x or 3x and step back instead of cropping afterwards. Telephoto flattens the background and flatters faces, and you keep full resolution.

5. Clean the edges

Before you shoot, scan the four edges of the frame. Remove the stray cup, the half-visible person, the bright sign. A clean frame looks edited even when it is not.

6. Use light from the side

Side light from a window gives texture and depth to faces and food. For travel shots, keep the sun behind you.

7. Apply a look in camera

If you want a finished color grade without an editing app, use a camera with built-in looks. slay includes 38 LUTs, so the photo is ready to post.

The shortcut: let the camera show you

Every step above is built into slay's 14 guides. Pick a guide and the overlay, height, angle, zoom and distance are right there on the viewfinder. Browse all 14 guides.

FAQ

Do I need an app to compose better photos? No — the grid and the steps above go a long way. An app like slay just makes it faster by showing the exact layout for each type of shot.

What is the easiest composition rule to start with? The rule of thirds. Put the subject on one of the grid lines.
