25 engagement photo ideas (from the proposal to the announcement)

The best engagement photos tell your story: where you met, what you love doing together and the ring that started it all. You need three kinds of shots: a few classic portraits, a few candid moments, and a ring close-up. Shoot them in golden hour and you will have photos for the announcement, the save the date and the wedding slideshow.

The ring

1. Hand on the chest. Her hand with the ring resting on his chest, at 3x.

2. Hands intertwined. Both hands, the ring on top, shallow focus.

3. Ring on a book or flower. The ring alone on something meaningful.

4. Ring in front of the couple. The ring sharp in the foreground, the couple blurred behind.

Classic portraits

5. Forehead to forehead. Eyes closed, smiling, at 2x.

6. The embrace from behind. One partner wraps their arms around the other from behind, chin on shoulder.

7. The almost kiss. Noses touching, a second before the kiss.

8. The diagonal. One partner slightly closer to the camera so heads sit on a diagonal. The Two-Point Vertex guide draws it.

9. Small couple, big place. The two of you small at the bottom of a landscape or architecture. The Travel Shot guide frames it.

Story locations

10. Where you met. The café, the campus, the bar.

11. Where you proposed. Recreate the moment.

12. Your first date. Same restaurant, same table.

13. Your neighbourhood. Your street, your coffee shop.

14. Your home. Cooking dinner together, coffee in the kitchen.

Activities

15. A picnic. Strawberries, a blanket, the ring visible.

16. Dancing in the street.

17. A road trip. Hands on the gear stick and the ring in the light.

18. Your hobby. Climbing, cooking, playing music, painting.

19. With your dog. The dog in the middle, or holding a sign.

Announcement shots

20. The "she said yes" sign. Or a letterboard with the date.

21. Champagne pop. Burst mode.

22. Showing the ring to the camera. Both smiling, at 1.5x.

23. The save the date. See save the date photo ideas.

Golden hour

24. Walking through a field. Backlit, holding hands.

25. Sunset silhouette. The ring hand raised against the sky.

Tips

  • Golden hour. The last hour before sunset gives warm, soft light.
  • 2x for portraits. It blurs the background and flatters faces.
  • 3x for the ring. Get close, tap to focus on the stone.
  • Coordinate outfits. Two or three colours from the same palette.
  • Use a tripod and timer if no friend is free.
