20 graduation photo poses that are not the diploma handshake

Gowns are shapeless, so graduation poses need movement and angles. Turn your body slightly away from the camera, give your hands something to hold (the diploma, the cap, the tassel), and add movement: walking, tossing, sitting with the gown spread out. Here are 20 poses.

Standing

1. The diploma at the chest. Body angled, diploma held in both hands.

2. Hands on the lapels. Confident, slightly turned.

3. Looking over the shoulder. Back to the camera, face turned.

4. Leaning on a column or doorway.

5. Cap held up to the sky. One arm up, looking at it.

Sitting

6. On wide steps, gown spread, diploma on the knee.

7. On a low wall, legs crossed, looking away.

8. On the grass, leaning back on one hand.

9. On a bench with books.

Movement

10. Walking towards the camera. Gown flowing.

11. The cap toss. Burst mode.

12. The jump. Arms up. Burst mode.

13. Spinning, gown flaring.

14. Throwing confetti.

Close-ups

15. The tassel turn. Hand on the tassel, at 3x.

16. Peeking under the cap. The cap tilted down, eyes looking up.

17. Holding the decorated cap next to the face.

With others

18. Back to back with a best friend.

19. Between your parents, diploma in front.

20. The friend line-up, arms around each other.

Angles that flatter a gown

  • Turn 30–45 degrees away from the camera, then look at the lens.
  • Camera at chest height, not above.
  • 2x zoom for portraits; avoid 0.5x close up.
  • Show the waist: a hand on the hip or holding the gown in.
  • Shoot in shade or golden hour so black gowns keep their detail.

The Portrait 2 guide puts the head on the top third line at 2x, the classic portrait frame.
