20 group photo poses for 3, 5 and 10+ people

The two rules of group poses: every face must be visible, and heads should not all sit at the same height. Stagger people (sitting, kneeling, standing), keep them close, and give the group something to do. Here are 20 poses by group size.

Three people

1. The triangle. One person forward and taller in the middle, two slightly behind and lower. The Triangle 1 guide places the points.

2. Sitting on steps, each on a different step.

3. Arms around each other, walking towards the camera.

4. Back to back to back.

Four or five people

5. Two sitting, three standing.

6. The V shape, tallest in the middle.

7. Leaning on a wall, different stances.

8. Piled on a sofa.

9. Walking in a line, talking.

Ten or more

10. The staircase.

11. Rows: sitting, kneeling, standing.

12. On a slope, facing downhill.

13. The circle from above, heads together.

14. Around a table.

Candid poses

15. Mid-laugh. Someone tells a joke right before the shot.

16. Everyone looking at one person.

17. The jump. Burst mode (swipe the shutter left and hold).

18. The huddle.

19. Throwing something together: confetti, caps, leaves.

20. The serious one, then the silly one.

Tips

  • Shoot from slightly above for bigger groups.
  • 1x lens, step back. Avoid 0.5x close up.
  • Count to three, shoot on two. People blink on three.
  • Take several frames.
  • Check the edges so nobody is cut off.
