15 newborn photo poses parents can do safely at home

At home, the safest and most beautiful newborn poses are the ones babies already do: curled up on their side, swaddled on their back, or asleep on a parent. You do not need props or complicated positions. You need a warm room, a big window and a parent's hands close by.

On a bed or blanket

1. Swaddled on the back. Wrapped snugly, hands near the face. Shoot from directly above.

2. Side-lying curl. Baby on their side, knees tucked, hands under the chin. Keep a rolled towel behind the back for support.

3. Tummy time, head turned. Only when the baby is awake and supervised; shoot at baby's eye level.

4. Stretch and yawn. Wait for the yawn. Burst mode.

5. Wrapped with one foot out. One tiny foot peeking from the swaddle.

In a parent's arms

6. The cradle. Baby in the crook of the arm, parent looking down. Shoot over the parent's shoulder.

7. On the forearm. Baby lying along the forearm, head in the hand, facing the camera. Only with a confident grip.

8. Held up to the face. Cheek to cheek, eyes closed.

9. Skin to skin on the chest. Baby asleep on a bare chest, parent's hand on the back.

10. Both parents' hands. Baby lying in both parents' cupped hands, close to the bed surface.

With siblings

11. Sibling sitting and holding. Seated on the sofa with a pillow under the arm, a parent right next to them.

12. Lying side by side. Sibling lying next to the baby on the bed, looking at them.

13. The forehead kiss.

Details

14. Hands and feet. Tiny feet in a parent's palm, at 2x.

15. Asleep with a favourite toy. The toy next to the baby, never covering the face.

Rules for newborn posing

  • Never force a pose. If the baby resists, move on.
  • Hands within reach. Always.
  • Keep the face clear of blankets and toys.
  • Avoid composite poses like the "froggy" or hanging in a sling from a branch. Professionals create those from multiple supported shots.
  • Warm room, short sessions, right after a feed.

Light and framing

  • Big window, sheer curtain, baby side-on to the light.
  • Room lights off for clean skin tones.
  • Shoot from above for blanket shots, at baby level for close-ups.
  • 2x zoom lets you shoot from further away without disturbing them.
